Geek Vacation

This weekend, I'll be on vacation, doing some geeky things.  Just a quickie trip, but cram packed with some seriously fun stuff!

The itinerary:
Star Wars:  Where Science Meets Imagination - A Touring exhibit which just happens to be in the area while we are. Arguably the most geeky thing we will be doing this weekend. The Museum also promises to deliver quite an interesting array of other exhibits which speak to the science nerd in me.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter (in Islands of Adventure) - When I found out that I could add on an admission to this park to my HHN ticket for only $20 I was sold. This will be my second visit, and I'm hoping it's less crowded than my initial visit in August of 2011.
Halloween Horror Nights- As a Florida Resident, I got a deep discount on the tickets, and I've been aching to go for ages.  Once they announced a Walking Dead House, I was not missing this year. There will be other themed houses, including Alice Cooper, Penn and Teller, Gothic, Silent Hill, and Classic Monsters.  Along with the houses select rides are open, including the new Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem.  Loved that movie, and can't wait to experience some of the less "scary" aspects of the evening.

As you can see, I'm completely excited about all of this, and I'll have some write ups on them all when I return.....if I don't fall to the walkers!

Set Phasers to Stunning.

(Source)

It's pretty obvious that I'm a huge Wil Wheaton fan.  He's so awesome, that I include him on my list of 5 people living or dead I'd invite over to dinner, provided he brings a board game and some of his home-brew.

I digress. He'll be appearing in an episode of Big Bang Theory on CBS.  I'm thrilled to hear that he'll be returning to my favorite CBS sitcom, and I can't wait to see the episode.

According to Wil, the show will air on November 8th.  In the meantime, enjoy the picture that Wil posted on his blog earlier today!

Happy Birthday Cartoon Network!

(Source)
Can you believe that Cartoon Network is 20 years old?  They brought us The Power Puff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory, and Adventure Time.  Adult Swim brought back Futurama.

When I was a youngling, I faked sick to watch Hanna Barbera cartoons.  It's changed a lot in the last 2 decades, but it's always been one of my favorite places on basic cable.

They're even doing some fun things for their big milestone birthday!  Vote for your favorites!

Cartoon Network, you've come a long way baby.  I'm glad to say I've been there from the start!

Oh, my dear. A favorite from my childhood and a favorite from my late teens just collided in awesome.

Ben Folds, you're my freaking hero.

Theeeeeeey're Back!

(Source)
Yes, parents, your worst nightmare has returned, that creepy creature that won't stop talking, the Furby

Some of you may wax nostalgic for these minions of your childhood, however, when the Furby came along 14 years ago,  I was 17. If I'd had Furby Fever, that would have been social suicide.

It's not to say I was free from the annoying toys of childhood. Growing up I had something called a Chubble.  I like to think of it as a primitive Furby.  It was light reactive, and the ONLY way to turn it off was to yank the 9-volt battery from it's butt.

I'll be honest, when Furby was introduced, the only thing I wanted to do was dissect it.  I swore that they were minions of the devil, because, let's face it, they looked like furry demons, and they lack an off switch. Tell me that's not downright diabolical.

Fast forward to the reinvented Furby.   Unlike the original Furby which just wobbled, blinked, and spoke in a nearly unintelligible robotic voice, this thing moves, speaks more clearly, and it can show emotion because of the LCD eyes.  It is way more interactive, and it's also way more creepy.  I like to call this the Skynet Furby because of the way it can interact with the Apple iOS (and eventually Android).

Engadget has a pretty neat hands-on review, complete with 2 videos that will show you just what you're getting yourself into if you invite one of them into your home.  I'm thoroughly convinced that you could program this version to be an evil minion.  I wonder if my engineer brother wants to try that out. No? Was worth a shot.

Rumor has it that this is going to be a pretty popular toy this year.  So, parents, brush up on your Furbish, and for heaven's sake, don't get it wet, and don't feed it after midnight.

Revolution has arrived.

(Source)
My Facebook is on fire with commentary about Revolution.  Most of it from my friends who consider themselves experts in science, survivalism, and science fiction/fantasy.  They're the continuity freaks, the ones who tuned out of Lost when the Polar Bear showed up.  They're the ones who assume that all of this world's rules apply in fantasy/science fiction. It's not meant to be taken literally, it's J.J. Abrams for cryin' out loud!  Going into it, I know I can expect certain rules of reality not to apply, and so I settled in.

This show has been on my radar since I saw the first teasers earlier this summer.  The premise is intriguing, and I admit, I took the bait.  Ignoring my nay saying friends who already have a hate on for the show, I kept an open mind. My honest opinion? I quite enjoyed it.  It's something different in a sea of Procedural Crime Drama XYZ, and Unrelatable-Not Funny Sitcoms. Consider Revolution penciled into my Monday Nights.

It deserves a chance to be taken for what it is.  A dystopial fantastical joyride in a world that we couldn't possibly understand after a one hour episode.  NBC has it available for viewing right now.

All you haters can go watch Football.

Star Stuff

Growing up, one of my favorite subjects was science  I even had a play house in the back yard which I called my "Mad Scientist Laboratory."  I was not the typical little girl.  I wanted to be either an equine veterinarian or a marine biologist when I grew up.  I didn't end up doing either of those things, but I still have a love and appreciation for science to this day.  I think it's led me to my most recent sort of obsession. Carl Sagan's Cosmos. He sort of looks like a creepy cult leader in those turtlenecks, don't you think?

I was having a pretty rough week,  I wanted something to drown out the static in my head, so I headed over to youtube and started sidebar surfing.  While doing this, I found the Symphony of Science videos.  If you haven't checked those out, I totally recommend them. They are fantastic, but I wanted more. So I googled it, like any child of the internet generation would, and I stumbled across the Cosmos series on Hulu.   Oh, and it's free.

I decided to turn it on as late afternoon background noise. I am incredibly impressed with this.  Sagan is very well spoken, almost poetic in his description of the Cosmos. Despite the fact that it was created in the late 70s, very little of the scientific facts have changed.  It's fascinating.  If you're interested in space, the universe, life on earth, and the possibility of life elsewhere, it's definitely worth checking out. I have learned so much, and gained so much perspective from this series.

It has reignited my passion for science.  My love for deductive reasoning.  My hope that one day we can put aside all of our differences, and come together as the Human Species, to take care of this, our home.
Never stop learning. Never stop searching for answers.

Geeks in Love.

After 20 years together, two acquaintances of mine have pulled off the most awesome wedding ever!  They decided to recreate the cover of Astonishing  X-Men #51 where Northstar marries boyfriend Kyle Jindau.  They celebrated their union at Atlanta's Dragon*Con. I wish these two fantastic gentlemen all the best.

Congratulations Brian and George!  I wish you all the best!

Instacube!

(Source)

I was just about to head to bed, when I made the most amazing discovery on Pinterest. Instacube!

Another really awesome project funded through kickstarter.  If I haven't already said it, I love that program.  It allows creative, intuitive minds to bring their products and inventions to the market through the support of all kinds of people.  From corporations to individuals.  Amazing.  Okay, back on topic.

What is Instacube?  Basically, it's a gadget that streams instagram. I would buy it.  Why?  Because I'm obsessed with Instagram.  Don't believe me?  You obviously don't follow me on Facebook.

(Soutce)
It looks like it has the financial backing, so there's a good chance we could see this available soon!  I'm probably a little too excited about this, but, I can't help it.  Seriously, sign me up.

I know there are digital photo frames that can pull photos from a memory card. Don't get me wrong, they're great.  Love them.  My grandfather has one.   I do have one small issue with them.  You have to switch out memory cards and constantly update your photos.

With Instacube, you get new photos when your Instagram account does.  You can scroll through your library, your feed, all kinds of hashtags.  Want to see pics of the beach?  It can do that!

If you want to see more, their kickstarter page has a great video.  I tend to get really geeky excited about the weirdest stuff.  Sure, this will probably be a fad item, and when  Instagram goes the way of Myspace, well, I suppose I'll have to figure out a new use for this cool little box.

Now, you can have photos of your friends' lunch on your desk!  Imagine the possiblities!

I'm Burning Up the Sun to Say Goodbye.

I'm just now getting on the Doctor Who bandwagon.  I don't know why I didn't get on the ride sooner. I just finished up season two, and I cried like a little girl. So. Sad.  Heart. Broken.

I know this is a little hypocritical, but the Doctor/Rose dynamic is still a better love story than Twilight. It's a time travel thing. Age is irrelevant.

I'm gonna miss you, Rose Tyler.

Will CW Take an Arrow to the Knee?

(Source)
2012 has been the year of Archery.

First, Katniss Everdeen burst onto the scene catching the world on fire and pissing off the establishment in The Hunger Games. Then Hawkeye kicked a bunch of alien ass in The Avengers.  Later in the summer, Merida stole our hearts in Brave.   Now, coming in October on The CW, there's a new arrow slinger on the block, The Arrow.  It's enough to make me want to take archery lessons.

The CW's new show, Arrow, isn't based on the Green Arrow, or is it? According to the CW, it's loosely based on the comic.  This just means that the characters share some similarities, like names, but the story lines will not necessarily run parallel with the comics. I guess they don't want to upset diehard fans if they change or completely ignore a few minor details. Don't look at me that way, fanboys, you know I'm telling the truth.  I know you.

They've really been pushing this series, and I guess I'm buying into the hype, because I'm really looking forward to watching.  The promos are slick, and they've got me reserving October 10 to sit down in front of my TV.  Yes, I'm one of those people who prefers to watch it when it airs rather than wait until it shows up online.  I'm old school that way.

Want to catch a glimpse of Arrow in action? Check out the trailer, and a couple of other clips over at The CW.

Around the Blogiverse: Wesley Crusher Evolved

(Source)
If you don't already know this, I'm a huge fan of Wil Wheaton.  I don't want to sound like a creepy stalker fan girl, but I follow him on pretty much all social media, and I regularly watch his Geek and Sundry production, TableTop.  That's how I came across the internet phenomenon that he coaxed into creation.   He tweeted a request to the interwebs to basically color in/vandalize a coloring page from the Star Trek: TNG Coloring and Activity Book .

He has since posted lots of these onto a pinterest board called Wesley Crusher Evolved. So  much creativity.  Some are a little, uhm, questionable.  I created one, but it doesn't seem to have found it's way to Mr. Wheaton, yet.  The internet is huge and vast, and it's likely that it got lost in the universe of junk out there. It was sort of a tribute to his work in "The Guild" using some artwork from the comic, crappily pasted into Photoshop.  It's pretty embarrassing.

At any rate, I'm sure he won't mind seeing more of these floating out there in the internets, so create your own Wheaton.  It's a lot of fun, but you don't have to take my word for it.

Keep Calm and Color On.

B-Ouya!

Check this out!  The Ouya, which more than exceeded its Kickstarter goal, is going to be made.  This thing is super cool!

It's an open source console, which means it will bring all kinds of innovation to the table, and give us, the users, something we want, instead of  something the developers and the suits think we do.

Beyond the idea that it can be hacked without voiding your warranty, this is an interesting concept.  I love games.  That's no secret.  All the games that will be available are going to be free to play. With that, I'm pretty much sold.  I get really bored with games quickly, and it's safe to assume that I've never played a game through until completion, unless you count max levelling and being a member of a raid group for WoW (I  don't). This is why I like the free.  I don't feel bad when I just stop playing.

Will I be buying this?  Absolutely. Especially with the $99 price tag.

Game on.

Game Night: Zombie Fluxx

(Source)
JB and I typically play Magic on Tuesday nights, but since I have to work, we're going to try something a little different. It's primary election night here, and I'm being asked to do data entry for election results. Since Magic can get quite consuming, I figured we could play something a little different that would be a little less intense.  Enter:  Zombie Fluxx.

I've been thinking about this game since I spied it at Arena Comics on Free Comic Day back in May.  I didn't pick it up until this past weekend, when I was in the vicinity of Barnes & Noble.

Easy to set up. Easy to play.  We could barely play one game, because I was so busy, but we had a good time until I pulled "Larry the Creeper" which is basically "Game Over" when it's only 2 players. Since we didn't get a chance to really get into a game, I'll be bringing it over to our friends' Monthly Video Game Day.

I'm willing to bet this would be fun, even if you're not a zombie aficionado. This game is standalone, but it's also compatible with other Fluxx decks as well.   The variety of games available is amazing.  Oz Fluxx, Martian Fluxx, Monty Python Fluxx, and Family Fluxx, just to name a few.

Totally worth the price tag for the hours of use I'll be getting out of this one.

Just remember...Double Tap.

Grimm Return

(Source)
I was beyond excited when I heard NBC was picking up Grimm for a second season.  If you'd asked me last year if I thought it would survive, my opinion was, well, grimm.  I suspected it would suffer the same fate as many NBC shows.  I predicted one season, and they'd push it off to SyFy where it would die a slow horrible death.

It survived the Friday night "Death Slot" and returns to NBC, with a prime spot after America's Got Talent.  Season 2 promises to be just as good with more storytime baddies.

I don't know about you,  but I'm really looking forward to more of Nick's blutbad sidekick, Monroe. This season holds more exciting developments for all of our favorite characters.  Season 1's finale shocker sets up some really great story lines this season.  I can't wait!

This was by far my favorite show of last season, and it doesn't look to disappoint me this time around.

Catch the preview over at NBC.com.

Storytime is over.  Grimm is on.

Edit: I absolutely despise what they did to the opening credits, what is this, The CW?

Using a Die to make Important Life Decisions

The election is coming up.  I don't usually get political, but I thought it might be fun to see how my ballot would look if I let the die take control and make my decisions for me.  I grabbed my sample ballot, and my brand spankin' new 20 sided die.  This would prove effective on all races but one.

Here's how I broke it down.  Races with 2 candidates would be determined by an even/odd on the die.  This is my standard rule for a yes or no when rolling a polyhedral die.  One race had four candidates so I gave each a range of 5 numbers in sequence.  The final race on the ballot had 3 candidates, which required that I use a different die.  So I grabbed a standard 6 sided die, and assigned each candidate 2 numbers in sequence.

It was quite fun to make this decision this way, but I don't recommend taking your die bag into the voting booth.  My die did select some of the same candidates I've been seriously considering, but I still need to do more research to determine where my actual and final vote will be cast.

When it comes to making life decisions for real, I'd probably only use the die method to determine where you want to go for dinner, which movie to rent, or what color shirt to wear.  JB and I used this method of decision making Saturday to determine restaurant to eat at.  The die chose my first selection.  I later used the die to determine which box of Magic cards for him to buy.  He was disappointed in the die roll, so he decided not to go with the die selection.  It's more fun than flipping a coin.

Try it one weekend.  Grab your favorite polyhedral die, and let it choose your adventure.  I promise you'll have a good time.

Keep on Rollin'

PS.  Florida Voters, Primary Election is Tuesday August 14.  Vote if you haven't already taken advantage of early voting.

Apptastic: Radiant Defense

(Source)
I love my smartphone.  I love that there are a vast array of games available for the Android.  Some are really great, and some are, well, bad.  Today, I'm going to talk about one of the better ones I've had the pleasure of downloading, Radiant Defense by Hexage, Ltd.

It was a featured free app on the Google Play store, so, I figured "why not?"  Ok, it was also about 1AM, and I couldn't sleep, so the shiny pictures in the marketplace swayed me. It's is your standard Tower Defense style game with a dash of space fun.   I love tower defense style games, so downloading this was a no-brainer for me.  I absolutely love it. There's a paid version which unlocks a few more weapons so you'll be able to better deal with some of the enemies. I'm a huge fan of free, so I didn't get the paid app. It's also available for the iPhone, so all you apple users can get in on the fun too!

(Source)
You're a member of an intergalactic army, and your job is to place your weapons to protect the spiral.  I'm not 100% what that spiral is, but you have to prevent the alien invaders from getting to it.  There's a building phase, where you place modules to adjust the path of incoming enemies, you can add and upgrade weapons.  Next is the invasion.  Sometimes you get messages from commanders, before the battle, which is a little annoying, but usually it gives you tips about the enemy you're about to face. During the invasion, you can add and upgrade your weapons. I don't recommend selling weapons in this phase.

Graphically, this is probably one of the prettier game apps I've seen.  The colors are bright, cheerful, and kid friendly.  There's no blood, when the aliens "die" they explode into bubbles.

I'd probably pay for the full app, but like I said, I like free. This is a super fun diversion.  Give it to your kids when they're being annoying, and let 'em kill some aliens.  I totally recommend it.  I'm super addicted.

Wanna play?  iPhone users go here.   Androids go here.

Defending the Earth until bedtime.....

Curiousity: Touchdown Confirmed.

A great achievement for NASA, Science and humanity.  Curiosity has landed on Mars.  It's not the first probe we've sent out there, but it's definitely one of the most advanced.  It's also the biggest!  It weighs about a ton, and it's equipped with HD photographic equipment.  It's already sent back photos to us.  It's been a successful mission already.

I didn't stay up to watch live, because I had work in the morning, and to be honest, watching a control room for hours on end is quite boring.  However, it's not difficult to find a video replay of the event.  This morning I watched some video of the scientists when touchdown was confirmed, the cheers were as great as an Olympic Gold Medal Celebration. You can follow the continued adventures of Curiousity at Nasa.gov.  I'm sure it will also continue making the news for the next few weeks.

Congrats NASA.  I'm grateful my Facebook feed is now cluttered with hoorahs for Curiousity, and not political nonsense!

To Infinity and Beyond,

Hobbits are afoot.

Bilbo Baggins, at your service!

Get ready for it, brace yourselves, and please don't throw things at me....

I don't like the Lord of the Rings films. I know, take away my geek card right now.  I was bored.  Very very bored.  I have fallen asleep in my several unsuccessful attempts to watch them.  Call me crazy, but my favorite part of the whole mess was Smeagol/Gollum, despite the fact that he's basically the Jar Jar Binks of this series.

The LOTR trilogy worked better than a tranquilizer in putting me to sleep.  They were so long, and don't even get my started on the extended editions. I will admit, they did make me want to visit New Zealand.  The cinematography was incredible. Maybe part of my problem is that the story is so long and drawn out, it's an epic tale, no doubt, and I wouldn't slight anyone who rank it among the best tales of all time.  Tolkien painted a pretty picture, and Jackson made it real.  It's admirable.

This being said, I'm very much looking forward to The Hobbit in December.  Perhaps the major difference being that I've read the book, which I adored.  Just watching the trailer makes me giddy. I recently finished reading it.  This was my second attempt to tackle this novel.  My first try was as a pre-teen.  My attention span back then was worse than it is now, and well, I got bored.  Maybe that's why I didn't care for the LOTR films.  I remembered how boring old, Bilbo was.  Now that I've travelled there and back again with him, I'm stoked to see how Jackson treats our short friend with the hairy feet.

Since I'd seen the trailer before hand, and I was already familiar with Gandalf, I sort of imagined the characters the way they are presented here.  I look forward to visiting Middle Earth now.

Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.

With the recent announcement that there will be three, I can't help but wonder if that third film is just a money grab, or if it's really needed. Jackson and company seem to think so. Then again he also thought that the original films needed to be well over 3 hours in the extended editions.

And now for the audience participation bit.  Since I've read the Hobbit and I'm looking forward to the film treatments, I'm starting to wonder if I'll be more interested in the other movies if I read the books. What do you think?  Should I read the books, and then give the LOTR another go?  Do you think I'll be a crazy psycho who claims that the books will always be superior to the films?

With that, I'll leave you to your dreams of dragons and treasure.

In Which Real Life Trumps Blog

If you follow me on Facebook, you already know this. My father, who molded his children in his geeky image, had some pretty major surgery today.  He's doing well, though a bit doped up and groggy.  I went to visit him this afternoon in the hospital just after he'd been placed in his room to recover.  As I greeted him, he gave me the Vulcan hand gesture for Live Long and Prosper.  We all had a laugh, and I knew in that instant all was well.

So, my posts will be sporadic in nature until life resumes its normal course.

Until then, Live Long and Prosper, friends.

Geek Vid Roundup

The internet is full of fun and geeky things.  Here are 3 videos I've seen this week that made my inner geek squeal with joy.  Watch, and be entertained!

This has been making the rounds.  Star Wars that I Used to Know.  It's a good bet that if you haven't seen this, or heard of this, you lack geeky friends and an internet connection.

I discovered this fantastic parody of LMFAO's "Sexy and I know it" while killing time at lunch. Growing up with Star Tre,k this is freaking hilarious.  I especially enjoy the section with the Tribbles. Can't be Star Trek without those creepy fuzzballs.  They're trekkies and they know it, and so am I.

"Country Boy, Gamer Girl," features Felicia Day and some very questionable eye make up. She even wonders what she was thinking.    This girl is extremely talented, and if you don't know who she is, I am very sorry for you.  She's hilarious, and geeky without apology.  For more Felicia Day check out Geek and Sundry.  You won't be sorry!

Tune in next week for more geektastic entertainment! Same bat time, same bat channel!

Taste Test: Bacon Cheddar Flavored Popcorn

(Source)
I'm slightly obsessed with bacon.  In fact, it's safe to assume if you put bacon on it, I'll probably try to eat it.  So, when I spied a box of J&D's Bacon Pop on the shelf, I couldn't help myself.

I have had it sitting around for a few weeks, and I decided that today was the day.  I'm going to pop this stuff up.  So I tossed a bag in the microwave and waited.  It smelled like bacon, which was promising.  In my head I imagined the popcorn would come out fluffy and covered in a neon orange cheddar coating.  Instead, I was met with seemingly normal white puffy popcorn.  Color me disappointed.

Now, the flavor....the first bite...I liked it all right.  It was full of bacon flavor, with a slight hint of cheddar. Unfortunately, after I ate about 3-4 handfuls, I couldn't handle the taste anymore.  This usually happens to me with all microwave popcorn.  There is a bonus to this bacony treat, it doesn't have icky weird chemicals on it like most microwave brands. So, all in all, it's worth a shot if you like to freak out your friends with weird food. It would make fun game night fare.  As for me, I'll stick with my standard popcorn.  Canola oil, kernels, and a touch of salt.

If you dare, you can find this in any number of places.  I picked mine up at Cost Plus World Market, but it's also available online.

Batmania

I am looking forward to Dark Knight Rises.  It looks interesting and fun and dark.  However, I am not looking forward to hearing Christian Bale talk like he's eaten half a bag of rocks with a side of sandpaper. My partner in geekiness bought the tickets early, so we'll be catching an IMAX matinee.   We've seen every Superhero movie this summer, and I'm starting to think we're addicted to heroes and movies.

I had a wicked cool project planned, and then I met the fail whale. It was a learning experience, and I will not use contact paper for a stencil again.  Freezer paper is the way to go.  I've done shirt painting projects with it before, and it worked wonderfully.  The end result of the contact paper stencil is all right, but I don't think I'll wear it out in public.   It looks like I made it myself, and well, that ain't cool.

Instead I thought I'd share this really awesome project that a friend did for her home!

In the guest room, she painted Gotham City! Check it out!  I don't have any better photos of  the complete room, but it's still way cool!  Her twin girls love Batman, and the whole family dressed as Batman this past Halloween.  How awesome are they? I love these people.

(Source)
Oh, and just in case you wondered, my favorite Batman is Adam West.  Corny, annoying, weird, campy Adam West Batman.  I watched it all the time growing up.  BANG!  POW!  ZIFF!

On a much more somber note, I want to say that I was deeply saddened by the tragedy  during the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, CO. My heart goes out to the people affected  by this senseless crime. It's just awful.  I don't understand why someone would do this. It doesn't even seem real.

Until we meet again, Peace, Love, and Batman.

The GeekVenture Begins

Greetings Bloggiverse!

I'm a geek. I'm 31 and I have toys on my desk at work. I obsess over the weirdest things, and I'm pretty sure that I  drive my family, friends and coworkers insane.  I'm eccentric, and weird.  I'm not ashamed.

My goal for this blog is to talk about the things I geek out over.  (Books, movies, games, tv, DIY projects, cooking and pretty much everything else).  Basically, this blog is my crazy eccentric outlet.  I'm excited about this project, and I'm hopeful I can keep it running.

Sit back, relax, keep those tray tables up and locked, and get ready to lift off with GeekVenture.
